At Home: Guest Room Update
Our guest room has been evolving for some time now, and will most likely continue to do so. With recently installed carpeting and a painted accent wall, things have started to fall into place stylistically. It all began with West Elm's Stella bed, which I selected in effort to tie it in with other brass accents throughout our home. Soon after buying the bed, I came across a mid-century dresser with black trim and gold hardware that fit perfectly under the only window in the space. Next, I had the the wall behind the bed painted black to show off the headboard's elegant brass spindles. The rug, from Diablo Flooring, runs through the adjacent office into the guest room, thus making both spaces feel larger and more cohesive. Tulip shaped side tables flank the bed as do two large swing arm sconces. Textiles sourced from the Alameda Flea market decorate the bed and accent the guest room chair (a curbside find). The space has a definite "feel" to it now. It's very much a Cocoon Home look comprised of our signature layered neutrals, mixed patterns and the ever-so-present botanicals. Take a look:
Due to the fact that our office abuts the guest room, I use the dresser to store fabric and wallpaper samples for my design work.
Proudly, this corner is decorated with all repurposed items. The prints above the chair are from a garage sale (that we stopped at on the way to a DC wedding almost 15 years ago). The chair and the rattan ottoman were found curbside [YAY] and the textiles bought at the Alameda Flea Market. The plant was previously owned and the pot is from a consignment shop. I love a room with a mix of old and new elements. It often tells an interesting story.
Originally intended as a master bedroom suite with an attached bath, a fireplace and lots of closet space, Alex and I decided to use this space for visiting friends and family instead. Eventually, we may move into it, but for now I'm happy to see our guests enjoy this space.
Anyone up for a visit??
Room Inspiration: A Modern Mid-Century Dining Room
Now that most of the living room components for the Eichler home I'm currently working on are in place, we're moving onto the dining room. This is the room inspiration that is guiding the look and feel of the living spaces. Modern lines, warm metals and classic mid-century designed chairs will honor the home's iconic style, while remaining fully family functional. The West Elm dining table has been ordered, the benches have arrived and now we're waiting for the lighting and deciding on an area rug. Can't wait to see it all come together and to share this home's before and after images. Room elements:
Curio Display Cabinet, Plaza Chandelier, Boerum Dining Table and Benches, Eames Dowel Leg Side Chair, Herringbone Hand Knotted Flamestitch Rug.
Client Update (II): #beaconhillchd
About this time last week I was in Boston working with my #beachonhillchd clients. I shopped and selected rugs, accessories, and even plants, for their newly renovated space. With the addition of the textiles and botanicals the rooms took on a 'homier' look and feel. Surprisingly, the color orange became the accent color in the main living areas allowing for ottomans and pillows to be interchangeable between the different spaces. In the kitchen we emphasized the cabinetry color, Farrow & Ball's Railings, with a dark rug and oversized vintage botanical prints. Brass hardware and a lighting fixture lent a classic look to this space. For the first time ever, I got to see the Modo Chandelier in its destined spot: smack dab in the middle of my clients' huge living room window. I love it there and I'm happy to say my clients do too. All of the lighting we selected for this Beacon Hill residence is spectacular and there's more to come!
I'll be venturing back in the warmer months to tackle the dinning room area and to add some final details to the living room. Many thanks to AK and BD for allowing me the opportunity to work on your home. It's been, and continues to be, a great experience!
7 Beautiful Brass Sconces
Now that I've added brass accents to our soon completely renovated kitchen, I'm looking forward to integrating a few brassy accents to other areas of our home. Since the hallway that joins the bedrooms and bathrooms is visible from the kitchen, it's logically the first place to focus on. Currently, the chandelier sconces that worked rather nicely with our Cambridge home decor don't blend so well with our Mid-century Cali one, so I'm rather keen on replacing them quickly. Here are 7 of my favorite fixtures for the corridor (some I like more than others). Can you guess which one is at the top of my list?!?
1. Galliano Wall Fixture Sconce, 2. Arteriors Home Maxim Light, 3. Dwell Studio Devoe Sconce, 4. Hinkley Margeaux Multi Bulb Wall Sconce, 5. Hudson Valley Lighting Walton 1 Wall Light, 6. Bestlite's BL7 Wall Sconce, 7. Rejuvenation Momo Single Sconce
Kitchen Renovation: Part 6
Now that some of the cabinetry is in place, our kitchen is beginning to take shape. We can actually imagine ourselves moving about cooking, entertaining, snacking and it feels really good! Alex already made good use of our new island to build the Lindsey Adelman light fixture that will hang above it. I've been impatient to see how the new and old accessories will work with the current color palette and have been playing around with area rugs, flatware and art. If all goes as planned, the countertops will be installed on Thursday and the cabinet doors will follow suit. I must admit, we're more than ready to have it all finished. They're not lying when they say a kitchen is the heart of the home!
